Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows- Trailer

Tim Burton is back with Johnny Depp and writer Seth Grahame-Smith in the Dark Shadows. The movie version stars Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, Helena Bonham Carter, Chloe Moretz and, judging by the trailer, plenty of classic 1970s music.  While the original 1960s series Dark Shadows was a more sinister and dark story of run-ins with vampires, monsters and werewolves, Tim Burton’s remake is a comedy. While Johnny Depp plays the resurrected Barnabas Collins, who becomes  a blood sucker out of water after waking up in 1972 in a household filled by the likes of Michelle Pfeiffer,Helena Bonham Carter and Chloe Moretz .  And yes the trailer looks good. The film opens in May. Check it out here -

The Rum Diary- Trailer starring Johnny Depp

Based on the debut novel by Hunter S. Thompson, “The Rum Diary” tells the increasingly unhinged story of itinerant journalist Paul Kemp (Johnny Depp). Tiring of the noise and madness of New York and the crushing conventions of late Eisenhower-era America, Kemp travels to the pristine island of Puerto Rico to write for a local newspaper, The San Juan Star, run by downtrodden editor Lotterman (Richard Jenkins). Adopting the rum-soaked life of the island, Paul soon becomes obsessed with Chenault (Amber Heard), the wildly attractive Connecticut-born fiancée of Sanderson (Aaron Eckhart). Sanderson, a businessman involved in shady property development deals, is one of a growing number of American entrepreneurs who are determined to convert Puerto Rico into a capitalist paradise in service of the wealthy. When Kemp is recruited by Sanderson to write favorably about his latest unsavory scheme, the journalist is presented with a choice: to use his words for the corrupt businessmen’s financial benefit, or use them to take the bastards down.

The movie releases on Oct. 28, 2011. Check out the trailer here-

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides: Review

Captain Jack Sparrow is back.  After a disappointing third Pirates movie (At Worlds End), people lost interest in the Pirate series. But to be truthful, they lost interest in the series but not in Captain Jack Sparrow.  Johnny Depp donning the legendary role of Cap. Jack Sparrow has made a mark in the hearts of people. After the third installment, in 2007 grossed less than the second, Disney decided to make some valuable changes which worked this time. Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley are replaced by Penelope Cruz. And the Cehmistry between Penelope and Depp is just brilliant. The previous director, Gore Verbinski, was replaced by Rob Marshall. So a lot of changes were made to not repeat the mistakes as in the third installment. People even complained that the series which was about Captain Sparrow was also losing it sheen and Jack was not THE central character anymore. So in the fourth installment, Jack is back..with the Captain there somewhere ;)

Those who haven’t seen the previous series can also see this one without worrying much. The movie has not much connection with the previous three at least continuity-wise.  Storyline is somewhat weak I feel, but the performances are not.  My problem with the last two movies has been that they took the best part of the Series- Captain Jack Sparrow, and screwed up with the character. But in “On Stranger Tides” returns the Cap’n to his original form and thats what the part 4 is all about. Previous ghostly skeleton crews are gone and mermaid are in, that also in their dark versions. The movie is about  Jack Sparrow and Barbossa embark on a quest to find the elusive Fountain of Youth, only to discover that Blackbeard and his daughter(Penelope Cruz), who once dilly-dallied with Jack  are after it too. Few More lines/occasions like Jack’s delicious double entendre when Angelica recalls an earlier cruise and she was his first mate: “Was I the first?” he says. “I always wondered.”  Then there are zombies, mermaids, voodoos, swordfights etc which brings the movie back in the old groove. And in the center of all this is Captain Jack Sparrow.

Johnny Depp breathes life once again into the pirate movie with his smart, unpredictable best. Geoffrey Rush as usual shines as Jack’s best rival Barbossa, Penelope Cruz adds a layer of Oomph.. in the movie. McShane as Blackbeard is a welcome addition. I wish we could see more of her and Jack Sparrows’ teasing and flirting each other. What I didn’t like in the movie was the storyline (except the ending which was somewhat better), too many sub-plots and 3D. I’m not a big fan of the choice to make every big movie in 3D. And this one in 3D…POINTLESS and unnoticeable. I feel besides Avatar none of the movie deserve to be in 3D.  The mermaid fighting scene is just dark and brilliant.  The film makes an adventurous departure from the traditional view about mermaids.

However, despite all the complaints, On Stranger Tides is a worthy instalment. Cinematography is skillful, costumes, sets and period recreation is authentic, Hans Zimmer’s score is brilliant & scenes with the mermaids is beautiful and intriguing. What the film manages to deliver is what made its predecessors such fun to watch in the first place and which was missing for last two installments. More of a comedy with fantasy elements than an epic, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger tides will entertain you. Everything you like in the Pirate movie is back with this??Well not everything but still a lot of things.

When You’re Strange – Review- Unique and Different

Being a fan for sometime now, I like to see what other filmmakers think about Jim Morrison. Forty years after his death, Morrison still fascinates people. And its not because of his lifestyle, behavior, his songs or his poems but even his untimely death. Morrison alongwith Doors tried to change the world and the society through music and this documentary  ”When You’re Strange” recounts the legacy of the “The Doors” and Jim Morrison brilliantly. Using archival and backstage footage, the film shows all the chaos, change,  and integration of the band’s roots and rocky ride with then-current society.

I always felt I had some view on the band but this documentary gave me a new perspective. Unlike other movies on him, Morrison has been treated like a human being here. The documentary shows Jim as a person evolving over time. The history of the band is subtly told with some of the narrative retells information that the band’s devotees have known for decades, like the origin of the name “The Doors”, a reference to Aldous Huxley’s 1954 book “The Doors Of Perception” etc. There are few information which can amuse new fans like the very first song Robby Krieger wrote was “Light My Fire”.

The film has a choppy, unique structure with quite a lot of symbolic significance. The never-before-seen visuals, Morrison’s on-stage performances and backstage personality etc is extremely interesting. The music suits the whole narration.  The movie/documentary shows a chronological look at everything from the formation of the band in 1965, to it’s first gigs, and first album, to Morrison’s death, after years of alcohol and drug abuse. As the story moves on, we see archival footage of rehearsals, performances, and private moments including a Miami concert resulting in Morrison’s arrest and trial for indecency.

Overall after watching Oliver Stone’s movie about Morrison, I believe this one was a good change and a different version direction wise. The movie has been nominated at a lot of film festivals and was the winner at Sundance.  A must watch for a film student and also for Morrison fans
